5 Key Landscaping Tips For Home Builders

5 Key Landscaping Tips For Home Builders

Most new home owners leave the landscaping to last but I am here to challenge you to start planning your landscape as soon as possible, preferably whilst the house is being designed or built. My reasons being that you can save money and future headaches by planning things earlier plus get a much better result.

In particular built items like pergolas, alfresco’s, decks and entertaining areas could form part of the initial building permit application and included in your home mortgage, attracting a lower interest rate than a personal loan.

In my experience over the last 20 years designing gardens, one of the most common value-added construction items is the pergola or entertainment area. These are commonly positioned off the house,  if included in the design phase your Architect or Building Drafter can add the necessary structural support for a seamless transition.

1. Site Cut

Strategically slope or terrace the site to avoid costly retaining walls. Gradually stepping down the yard can create usable garden beds.  Also where possible keep all soil from the site cut as it can be used to create landscaping mounds later on.

2. Parking

Allow room for at least 2 cars, with enough space to manoeuvre in and out comfortably.

3. Bin Storage

Pick an easily accessible spot to store garbage and recycling bins. Use screens or plants to conceal the bins and minimize unsightly views.

4. Clothesline Access

Ensure the clothesline is accessible from the laundry door, wall mounted clothes lines are great if space is tight. I love these stylish fold out clothes lines from Milkcan see link here.

5. Pergola & Decks

Factor in pergolas and decks during initial building planning to extend living space outdoors. These high-value additions increase property resale potential. Incorporate necessary structural support into the framing design for a seamless look.

With a little bit of forward planning you can add beauty and functionality to your property.
